We are on the road again. This time we are headed to beautiful Colorado via I-80. We are still catching up with our Florida posts, but we will sprinkle some Colorado in the middle because we can.
We stopped for the night in one of the Iowa rest stops. Iowa has some of the best rest stops on this route. Plenty of room for cars to park overnight, spotless bathrooms, beautifully groomed grounds with some sculptural elements and walking trails.
But one of these stops had something extra. Fireflies! there were thousands of them flickering on the grass and in the bushes, but the best show was in the adjacent corn field. At the far end of the corn field were windmills with their own flickering lights and the show was mesmerizing.
We were able to catch a little bit of it in the video below. What a show!
It was as if they were communicating. Maybe the fireflies in the field were trying to compete with the new giant fireflies?
Isn’t that beautiful! They are not very big but really put on a big show. The landscape looks lovely too. Enjoy ????
It was an amazing show. The video doesn’t even begin to show it!
I have happy memories of camping in a place where fireflies were prevalent. They are a wonderful sight. I’m betting you’ve heard this tune, which is what immediately popped into my head. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=psuRGfAaju4
Oh, this is the perfect accompaniment to this post!
What a great song to go along with those fireflies
Have a great adventure
Thank you! I waved as we crossed Ann Arbor 🙂
I waved back!
How wonderfully special to have experienced fireflies! We were up in Gananoque last summer and it was there that I saw fireflies for the first time ever and it really was quite special!
It’s always so magical to see them. I’m glad you had the experience!
I Have only seen fireflies once and it was spectacular so I can imagine what it was like for you
I’m surprised that you only saw them once. Also, what time of the year would they be out in Australia? Is it during your spring?
Wow. So cool. I have never been lucky enough to see fireflies. Thanks for them. Quite the gift.
I’m surprised to hear that so many people see them rarely or not at all. I saw them almost every year I think. They really are very cool!
Beautiful, like natural fireworks and they are not spoiling the environment, they are making it beautiful . Thank you for sharing.
That’s a beautiful way to describe fireflies! Thank you!
That takes me back to my days in Manitoba. We used to see fireflies all the time. Safe travels. Allan
I’m glad you had the chance to do so. I love watching them!
Lovely video of the fireflies. These little creatures light up our yard every night. Ah Colorado – such a beautiful state. I have been there many times.
We had them on the farm every spring and it was always fun to watch them. Haven’t seen them yet around the new house. Colorado is very beautiful indeed!
We just finished our 3rd MI-Seattle trip on our RV on I-80 no less. Due to short of time, we missed the Yellowstone flood. We were completely mesmerized by the Dinosaur National Monument ( entered via 191 from I80. Take your time. We were in a hurry and it was getting dark so we missed stopping to enjoy the amazing landscape); then Salt Lake City. We didn’t have time to go into the city. We stayed in the Antelope Island campground for two days. The lake level is so low that the lake may disappear when you come next time. The scenery and wild life on the island is unexpected. Finally the Crater of the Moon. Hurry to see the bloom of wild flowers in a desolate landscape. Oh, we also did the Yakima river scenic byway in Washington. It is also beautiful and gas is cheaper in the Indian reservation. Wish I can write/blog like you. We will be in Seattle for a few weeks. If you come here, maybe we can meet up. We just went to the Mount St Helens National Monument over the weekend. (Seattle gas is expensive, fill it up in small towns about an hr from Seattle.)
Great to hear from you! We are only going as far as Denver to see our daughter for a couple of weeks. Maybe we can meet somewhere along the way at a later day ????. You CAN write a blog and it’s a great way to document your travels!
Never would I have thought that Iowa would have the best rest stops in the US! Fireflies are also a big plus! Makes me want to road trip again. 🙂
Haha, you should! Iowa is actually pretty interesting!
It’s magical, I was expecting the fairies to show up, maybe you stopped the video before 🙂
Haha, yeah, they came later with some pixie dust ????
Waiting for the next post ….
Such an amazing show to see.
It really was!
You reminded me of the lovely rest stops along the highways of the Western U.S. we used to stop at when we took our ‘motor’ trips years ago. They were wonderful! You also reminded me of the fireflies we used to see up in the Laurentian Mountains at night when I was a kid. Thanks so much. All the best with the memories you are creating for yourselves. Enjoy! Muriel
Glad I helped bring up some memories! Have a sunny day!
All the best on your drive to Colorado. What a lovely display from the fireflies.
Thank you!
I remember fireflies lighting up the neighborhood when I was a child. The boys like to catch them, but I just loved watching them flicker. Loved the video!
I have to confess to catching fireflies and putting them in a jar, but I did let them go!
I came across your blog through a comment you posted on Pete’s blog (PeteSpringer). Your blog name caught my attention immediately and then I started reading. I absolutely love your shared adventures on here! I’m not sure why WordPress sent you to my (very old) blog that I don’t write on much, but I’d love for you to see my more active one. I think we have a lot in common! http://www.EverpineForestandFarm.com
I can’t wait to read more from you! Thanks so much for sharing
Oh, it looks like your wordpress profile links to your old blog. I’m sure it can be edited ???? Looking forward to reading more about your adventures on the farm!
I feel like it is rare to see fireflies these days. We loved them as kids. So fun!
Maybe we just spend more time indoors in the evenings, or maybe they are in specific locations more than others?
I recently read about getting a permit in smoky mtn national parm to see the phenomenon. Cool you saw it at a rest stop. We used to see them in Texas as kids. No more
We used to see them every spring on our farm, but now that we moved, I don’t know if we will. It was a very cool sight at the rest stop.
