Crazy Williez Brewery

Harvest Hosts – Crazy Williez Brewery

Crazy Williez Brewery in New York State was our first Harvest Host stay.  We communicated by email and after a short back and forth they were happy to have us over despite the short notice.

We were a bit disappointed to find out that the brewery was open Thursday to Sunday only, and since this was a Tuesday it will be closed when we arrive.

Oh well, we thought, maybe we can stop on the way back again.

We drove through pastoral farms and the hilly terrain of Ilion village in New York State to arrive at the brewery in the evening.

As suggested in the email, we parked next to the brewery and soon after Tracy, one of the owners, arrived to welcome us. She was kind enough to have the brewery opened up just  for us!

That within itself was awesome and we enjoyed a fleet (8 beer sampler), a great conversation, more beer, and her wonderful hospitality.

The beer was great, but we won’t tell you what our favourite was.  Go there and hear the story behind each brew and judge for yourself!

Tracy is a storyteller – she was happy to share her knowledge about anything from chickens to beer to local produce and much more

Some things we learned while drinking beer at the brewery:

Chickens need 14 hours of sunshine to be productive egg layers.
When it comes to roosters, size doesn’t matter – a 3 pound rooster can rule.
Chickens can be mutts too.
Sexed chickens cost more than random ones.
Disney has a great campground.
If you drop a plastic spoon in the mash, you get to name a beer (see Spoonie in the photo below)
Looks like you can make beer out of pretty much anything.

The brewery is built with accents from an old sugar shack from Tracy’s family farm accompanied by Amish hand hewn planks to compliment the old boards.

There was a story attached to each one of the decoration elements and you could tell that it was a labour of love .

Here is spoonie for example…

The paddle also has a place of honour on the window seal, but you’ll have to go there yourself to hear the whole story.

We bought eggs the next morning and continued on towards the ocean. Update:  the eggs were phenomenal!

Harvest Hosts is free to stay so it’s nice to support them by buying some of their products.  We are hoppy we did 🙂  We were originally going to stay at an Alpaca farm and could have ended up with a wooly companion.

UPDATE: unfortunately, Crazy Williez Brewery closed the brewery since our visit.
