Niagara-On-The-Lake RVillage Get-Together

We’ve been back home for a week and already itching to go out again. When we saw an RVillage get-together in Niagara-On-The-Lake we decided to make it into a day trip.

RVillage is an online RVing community with a strong focus on bringing people together – whether online or through monthly local get-togethers.  There is also a yearly epic rally, Spirit Of The Road, that draws thousands of members.

The get-together was in the evening so we had plenty of time for explorations along Lake Ontario shoreline.  We left the highway as soon as we could and drove along the coast line and thought small towns.

Along the shore

If you remember we recently complained about the lack of accessibility to beaches in Ontario.   Well, we found quite a few nice beaches along the way.  I guess we never really looked in our backyard.  ALmost everywhere we stopped ahad a small beach with free parking,

Our first stop was to take a look at the pirate ship that we saw many times zipping along the highway.

Le Grand Hermine

The ship, Le Grand Hermine, is a replica of 16th century Jacques Cartier ship. It was brought over from Quebec to become a restaurant, but was left to rot away in Jordan Harbour because of lack of funding.   In 2003 it burned down, leaving the metal frame and distinctive masts as a roadside attraction.

If you look south, you see the what looks like the funnest water park aptly named Pirate Ship Cove.   We watched the kids have fun and then moved on along the shore.

Niagara-On-The-Lake

Our destination, Niagara-On-The-Lake is a tourist destination in Ontario, especially for the Niagara Falls visitors, but for some reason we’ve never been.  The small downtown core is dotted with historic buildings and although it can get crowded with flock of tourists, it’s well worth a trip.  A walking tour is probably best to get a feel of the rich history of this town.

Here are a few of the historic sites in and around town.

Niagara-On-The-Lake is surrounded by wineries and orchard, and we made it just in time for peach and nectarine season.

So good!

It was time to stop for a late lunch one of the many parks along the Niagara River before continuing to the Niagara-On-The-Lake Rvillage get-together location.

The get-together was in at Queenston Height Park, nestled on top of the Niagara Escarpment, a UNESCO world biosphere.

We made it to the RVillage get-together and enjoyed a couple of hours of laughter, food, and some good conversation with with 8 other fellow RVers.   Thanks to the organizers and those who showed up.  Here’s to seeing you again on the road!

After, we walked around the park to see the gardens and Brock and Laura Secord monuments,

and as the sun set, we drove home.  It was a full day.  You really don’t have to go very far to have fun.

Oh, and a nectarine cake was in our future.
