La Mesa Market - The Best Coffee in Utah

The Best Little Coffee House In Utah

This tale is about the best little coffee house in Utah.  It is also a tale of our shrinking world and online technology.

Full disclosure, we did not try every single cup of coffee in Utah.  If we did, this cup of coffee will to be up there with the best of the best.

But first.  let’s go back in time to our Ontario kitchen about 5 years ago.

I was on the phone with my brother telling him about our planned road trip to Utah.  My brother lives in another continent, but he did a similar road trip in Utah a few months prior to our conversation.  The trip was very fresh in his mind and he was eager to part with  information to help us plan our route.

We were both on Google Maps zooming in and out of potential routes.  I was busy writing notes, trying to keep up with him, when he said  “after you are done in Capitol Reef National Park make sure to stop at this place, they have the best coffee I ever had.”

He couldn’t remember the name of the place nor where it was exactly, so we switched to Google Street and ‘drove’ the road from Capitol Reef National Park together. He finally said, “I think this is it,” and guided me to a Google Street photo of what looked like a shack.

I did not look like much, but I made a mental note of the place.

Fast forward a few months and we are in the midst of one of our best road trips, travelling from Ontario to Utah and just leaving Capitol Reef National Park.  We drove on Utah State Route 24 going towards  Hanksville.  It was getting late and we were getting hungry.  Suddenly, I yelled “stop!”  and then I yelled “turn around – I think this is the ‘best coffee’ place!”

It was.

I’m not sure what got my attention.  I think that the porch looked familiar, but really, this is the image that I saw on Google Street a few months before that.  Not too much to go by.

And here is the picture I took of the Mesa Farm Market.

The lady behind the counter said that they don’t have much left since it’s the end of the day, but she can make us a salad with some bread and cheese.

We accepted and ordered coffee as well.

The place was modest and we didn’t really have high expectations despite my brother’s high praise.  The most exciting thing was a magical bench that converted into a large table with benches.

The food and coffee arrived quickly and we dug in.

My brother was right and then some!

Not only was it one of the best coffees we had, it was one of the best meals as well.  The fresh, sweet veggies medley paired with amazingly flavourful hard goat cheese and accompanied by crusty homemade bread. The meal was truly delicious and all grown, harvested, and baked in house.

We finished our meal and drove on, but this place stuck in our memories like no other restaurant.  I later Googled the place and really liked their philosophy of sustainable agriculture.

If you are in Capitol Reef National Park area between March and September, stop for a coffee and a meal; you will not regret it!  We are not sure what, if anything, has changed in the past 5 years.   Let us know if you were recently there, we would love a current update.
