Before Tony unretired way back when, he waged war on the squirrels that plague our bird feeders. At first it wasn’t a full-out war. He erected the bird feeder and made some baffles to prevent the anticipated squirrel attack.
It worked.
However, you may have noticed the snow on the ground…it looks like the squirrels that were not sleeping throughout the winter may have had less of a drive to climb up on to feeders. They may have been munching away on all of the food that they squirreled away in the fall, but whatever the reason may be, they were happy to let the birds keep their food.
Until spring.
As soon as temperatures warmed up they started attacking the feeders, but the baffles seemed to do the trick and keep them off the feeders.
That is, until the squirrel from hell arrived on the scene. He had no problems whatsoever scaling any obstacle that Tony put in front of him. Take a look. He is so agile!
So off he went (Tony, not the squirrel) and modified the cylinder baffles into cone ones. Will this do the trick?
Nope.
By the way, all of the knocking is us knocking on the window to get the little bugger off the feeder.
There were several trial and error of shape and height and I will spare you the details, but each and every one of them failed facing Super Squirrel.
Finally, some more modifications and calculations and the cones are looking better than ever. Will they do the trick?
It’s been weeks and no squirrel was successful in scaling the poles. It looks like they gave up. In fact, Super Squirrel is nowhere to be seen! I am happy to report that it looks like Tony has won his war.
I should say, the current battle. There is always something.
We did leave one feeder as an exercise apparatus if any squirrel is feeling a bit too chubby from the excess of food they were consuming.

it’s a war, won by lots of little battles (hopefully)
It is! Looks like we are on our way to a glorious win!
Man vs. nature. I’m reminded of the line from Jurassic Park – life finds a way. I wouldn’t be surprised if super squirrel doesn’t find a way either…
Hahaha, we are waiting and ready for the challenge 🙂
As the guy who reminds everyone of Bill Murray in Caddyshack with my legendary battles with gophers, I truly appreciated this. I tried every invention known to man, but they just moved to another part of the lawn to create havoc. We have a fairly large piece of property, and they move around from place to place digging holes everywhere. After a few years, I gave up and conceded defeat. I saw a video a month ago about a guy who had chronicled and videoed his many challenges with squirrels. They are incredibly smart and agile. Congratulations to Tony for coming out on top.
Yeah, gophers are in a different category altogether! Did you see the one with the NASA engineer and the squirrel obstacle course?
That is hilarious! We gave up trying to keep them out of our bird feeder and even added a corn feeder specifically for the squirrels. Our little “squirrelfriends” have become so tame they will come take peanuts from between our toes and hang out with us under the grape arbor. I guess we learned to make lemonade and the birds have had to learn to be a bit quicker to the dinner table. Our big problem is the mockingbirds! We’ve tried everything to keep them off of our tomatoes, but sad to say they had more fresh tomatoes this year than us. There might be a small greenhouse build in our future.
We have lots of chipmunks that are almost tame. They are adorable. Glad there are no mockingbirds here, but I’m sure SOMETHING will eat our tomatoes and it won’t be us 🙂
I have seen these erected here in Arkansas and it takes a big cone to stop the mighty fox squirrels here. So glad Tony came up with the solution. Squirrels are big pests.
They really are, but they gave us hours of entertainment!
We have similar problems. It’s bird’s feed for super-entertainment.
I have to admit it is entertaining!
Hilarious ???? I’m still laughing ????
Haha, glad it made you laugh, Linda!
