Ontario, Galveston, Savannah: Trip Summary

For the sake of switching things up a bit, we are doing our trip summary as a separate post.  It contains the general route and some statistics, campground locations and costs.  To see the stories and pictures of the place we stopped at, click on the highlighted links

Route:

We left Ontario on a snowy December day and spent the night at a Cracker Barrel parking lot in Ohio.  A quick stop at Big Bone Lick State Park and a night at Camp Wranglers in Kentucky (US$16).

Drove through Tennessee to Hot Springs National Park, spent the night at Gulch camp and continued to the Crater of Diamonds State Park (US$30).  We did not find any diamonds.

Our next stop for the night was at Boles Field Campground at Sabine National Forest (US$6 with electric!). From there we continued to Sea Rim State Park and Galveston National Seashore where we stayed for four nights (US$102).

Christmas time was spent at Palmetto State Park (US$72 for 4 nights) and included a visit to Avery Island.

We arrived in New Orleans on Boxing Day and stayed for 2 nights at Jude’s Travel Park (US$74).

After leaving New Orleans we stopped at Whitney Plantation on our way to Fairview Riverside State Park (US$21).

Boondocked at POW Camp at DeSoto National Forest finally a free night!

Biloxi and a 3 night stay at Sheppard State Park (US44) including a visit to Pascagoula and Big Lagoon State Park (US$20).

We made our way through Pensacola to Falling Water State Park and Lake Griffin (US$53.27 for both).

Then we spent two nights with cousins near Tampa and squeezed in a visit at the incredible Dali Museum.

Another cousins visit near Atlanta with a stop at FD Roosevelt State Park (US$5) followed by a visit to Habitat For Humanity Slum Theme Park in Americus.  We then stopped for the night at Whitewater Creek Park (US$26) south of Macon.

An interesting visit to Andersonville National Historic Site – A Mega POW Camp and Ocmulgee Mounds and a stay at Lake Sinclair Recreation Area (US$4.5!)

Our last grand destination was Savannah and Fort Pulaski and two nights stay Red Gate Campground (US$97).

Our usual dash to the border took us through several states in a long stretch of driving.  Lastly, we stayed at Wolf Run State Park in Ohio (US$25) before making it home.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • number of days travelled: 32 (31 nights)
  • distance travelled: 6510.73 miles or 10,478 km 
  • gas: 395.63 gallons or 1,495 litres
  • cost of gas: US$815 or CAD$1,067
  • average fuel consumption: 16.45mpg or 7 kpl
  • average cost of accommodation per night: US$19.50 or CAD$25.75 (5 free nights brought down the average)

    I love to spend time placing pins in google maps trying to plan potential vacation road trips! I usually do not follow through with them, though. It would be so fun to finish planning the trip and then to actually go! Very fun!
