Southbound, on our way home we stopped at the stunning Onaping High Falls near Sudbury.
A well-marked trail leads to several vantage points to view the falls.
In this part of the river, the Onaping River drops over 150 feet in a series of waterfalls, the largest of which is about 30 feet,
but each one of the falls is beautiful and interesting on its own.
The trail is about 2 km long on a somewhat rocky terrain with lots of large smooth rocks to sit on and watch the river go by.
On the way we spotted these curious features. Almost 2 billion years ago, a meteorite collided with earth in this area. There is some claim that these fractures in the rock are related to that impact. But no, these are actually evidence for dynamite explosions. You can read more about both the impact and explosives here.
Southbound on Highway 11,
there were lots of rock formations
and beautiful vistas.
We stopped for lunch in one of our favourit Ontario places
along the French River
We were just in time for some blueberry picking!
And just like that we were home again. Stay tuned for the trip summary and some thoughts about crown land camping in Ontario.

Wow – what a sky in that picture. Looks as if the storm is brewing.
We managed to slip away before the storm hit!
The falls are beautiful. You could sit on a rock and watch the water for a long time.
You sure can!
I agree with you for the French River, the site is impressive to see the river flowing between two cliffs as cut intentionally. The small interpretation center on the Voyageurs is also very well done.
It is simply stunning! The visitor centre is fantastic, but unfortunately it is closed for the time being because of the pandemic .
You’ve found another slice of heaven. I’m interested in learning more about the meteorite that hit the Earth in that area. It was fascinating to read the accompanying article to learn about the dynamite blasts being mistaken for the meteorite.
It is a fascinating area! The crater is the third largest in the world and believed to be the oldest one. There is a lot of interesting information online for those hirsty minds! We passed through Sudbury on our way back from our most recent trip and found another interesting area there. I’d like to go back and explore the area a bit more.
what a nice place to visit on your way home – I am a big fan of waterfalls…
We are too! Our next trip has many more 🙂
looking forward to seeing the pictures!
Since we stayed home and did yard work and deck work this summer, I really enjoyed following your travels and sharing in all those Ontario sites. We return to Ontario to visit family on a regular basis but don’t get to explore it like we used to. Love Northern Ontario.
I’m glad we had you along for the ride!
I recently hiked the trail to Onaping High Falls and visited the French River Provincial Park on a road trip around northern Ontario. Both places were quite lovely. Brings back memories.
We totally love both these places! We camped on an island in French River a few years ago and it was amazing!
