Our last post about Fairy Lake sparked some interest in the local wood carvings so here is some more information about it. It all started with the Emerald Ash infestation that swept over Ontario. Five hundred ash trees around Fairy Lake had to be removed and a local artist saw an opportunity. You can read about it here. Pete asked about the process and the article does confirm that the artist used a chainsaw for his creations. I see a future retirement activity for Tony (unless he waits too long and becomes to old a frail to handle a chainsaw).
This post is also about perception. In our post we referred to this sculpture as more “abstract” and only when we read the article, we realized that it was a statue of a monarch butterfly feasting on milkweed. Sometimes you need to take another look, but sometimes you just need a nudge in the right direction!
This got us wondering: do you think that stump chainsaw carvers become ice chainsaw carvers in winter?
Today we wanted to feature the fascinating travels of Ore de Drum. Just hit the translate button and enjoy!
I hadn’t seen the butterfly either. It would have made a good photo for a quiz. I’ve been following Ore de Drum for some time now and I also enjoy her posts.
It would have! Glad you are following this blog, it’s very interesting!
Now that you point it out it is a beautiful butterfly! Ha! Thank you for sharing that fact. 😊
I wonder if anyone recognized it for what it is. And my pleasure!
Thanks for looking into all this. I watched one of the videos at cancarve.com Pretty interesting stuff.
It’s really cool! I kinda want to try this!
I’ve often thought about what is harder, ice sculpting or tree carvings. I hadn’t thought that it could be done by the same people… 🙂
I haven’t either until now. I just Googled it and one carver’s website states that he does ice carving in the winter 🙂
as you suggested, that makes perfect sense!
I immediately noticed it was a butterfly, but I can see it being perceived as some kind of fairy, or other mythical creature. It’s all about the imagination, really!
Yes, it is!
Love the abstract butterfly😄
It’s a beautifully complicated sculpture!
