The Carado Banff has a nice wardrobe area next to the bathroom. It has 3 large drawers, a small counter area, and a very large compartment where you can hang shirts etc.
We don’t really need the hanging area. Between our jobs in archaeology and construction, and the added horse farm activities, we own more khaki than Gucci, and our jeans, T shirts, and sweatshirts will fit nicely in the drawers below, so we decided to convert the open, underutilized space for some extra shelving.
So here is what we did:
Cut shelves to size and attached L-shaped aluminum bars
We used 11mm (3/8″) good-2-sides plywood because it’s lighter than the other options.
Attached an angle (L-shaped) aluminum bar (1″X1″) to the front of the drawers and to the bottom of the cabinet to create a bit of a lip at the front.
We placed some things on the shelves just to get an idea of what the space will hold, and surprisingly it cleared 2 of the upper cabinets!
Finally, we reinstalled the doors.
BY THE NUMBERS:
-
- Cost (plywood, screws, aluminum pieces) – C$30.00
- Time to manufacture – about 2 hours
- Shelf 1 – 24″ X 15″, 11″ from the bottom
- Shelf 2 – 24″ X 14″ 21″ from the bottom
- Upper cabinets space cleared – 2

Very nice. Lacking your carpentry skills we went with three shelf hanging units we put one on each side of the slide out hanging bracket for a total of 6 “cubbies” I do think that baving the full shelf width is nicer.
Have you done anything about getting the three lower drawers to close more tightly and stay lockec? Keeping the upper doors closed has also been an issue for a number of owners.
Keep up the great work.
Brilliant idea! As for the drawers, we are staying with the bungee cords for now (attached from the drawer handle to the awning crank). The existing flimsy catches will need to be replaced – perhaps 2 per drawer. I’ll post once we do!
