Dilly “Dali” in Florida

Back to B.C. (Before Covid). In our last post we left Pensacola and Falling Water State Park. A new travel post may help take our minds off the current mayhem and madness even if our hindsight is a bit blurry now.  Our destination: Tampa area to spend some family time with our cousins.

We drove through Quincy Heritage District and stopped at the Gadsden Centre and Museum.  We loved Beth Appleton’s vibrant paper cut creations.

Here is a detail from the piece above that would give you a better three dimensional view; she cuts and colours the pieces of paper before assembling them into intricate creations.

We stopped at Lake Jackson Indian Mounds in Tallahassee for a quick peek.  The signage and interpretation on this site was very minimal.  It would have been nice to learn a bit more about it.

Regardless, we did climb to the top of the mounds for a higher view and tried to imagine what life would have been like during Mississippian times .

We made it to Trinity, FL and it was nice to spend a couple of days with our cousins.  This quality time also resulted in a few nice meals and a couple of good long showers.  Who would have thought that you need a break from a break!

Oh, we also got to ride in two electric vehicles in one day!

A Tesla

and its little sister, the golf cart.

Early morning dog walks to view the sun rise on the frosty golf course

and flirting with the palm trees

Salvador Dali Museum

We had such a fabulous visit to the amazing Salvador Dali museum

If you are like us, you had a Dali poster on your wall as a teenager.  It was fantastic to see some of his paintings in person.

Salvador Dali dabbled in other forms of art

and the architecture of the building itself is intriguing

as are some of the features on the grounds; such as this one (the bench, not Tony).

I did try on Dali’s moustache, but decided to keep my own.

There are statues

everywhere.

Dali and Walt Disney were good friends and collaborated in the 1940s on a short film that was rediscovered in 1999.  Take a look below at this unlikely collaboration.

If you want to see more about this fantastic collaboration, here is a longer documentary worth watching.

We stopped in Manatee State Park.  Alas, there were no manatees anywhere to be seen, but we did enjoy the hike.

Time to leave Florida and move on.

We did spot a couple of Barn Quilts on the way

and a sister Carado Banff in Crystal River

with Georgia on our mind.

Next—unless we are interrupted by a Coronavirus post—we will visit a Slum Themed Park in Georgia and get new tires for the van.  Stay tuned.

Loved reading your post. Have been to the Tampa area and loved the time we spent there. We spent a lot of time on the beach collecting shark teeth and fishing. Loved the palm trees.

We would love to hear from you!
