Southern Alberta is as far as you can be from any ocean in Canada, yet at the Red Rock Coulee Natural Area, there is evidence of a long-gone inland sea that left an incredible geological phenomena behind. These large spherical martian looking red rocks are among the largest sandstone concretions in the world. Red Rocks is an area of strange beauty and magical wonder and well worth the detour from the highway. If you are ever in Medicine Hat go check it out!
Looks like an awesome place to visit. I was in Medicine Hat when I was a boy but never knew about this place. Thank you
It is really cool. I hope you get a chance to visit again!
how interesting –
We thought so too!
It is just incredible what we can find on this planet if we have the time to explore. These rocks are quite unusual and I have never seen anything like them before. Thanks for sharing this.
They are unusual, but you can find them in other parts of the world. There are similar examples in Australia, New Zealand, the US, Asia, and Europe. The ones in Mendocino County, California look really cool!
Neat, nice to know these rocks are found in many places.
That is unbelievable! Thanks for sharing.
It is very cool!
that would be fun to visit, even if it is far from the ocean! 🙂
Haha, it is!
Amazing!
It is!
Geology uncovers so many secrets from the past. It is mind-blowing that there could have been an ocean there once. The rocks must seem so out of place.
It is mindblowing and they do seem out of place. Vet Sci-fi feel to it.
Just saw a typo Madicine instead of Medicine.
Thank you! fixed 🙂
This landscape looks so neat and so unexpected. I just always picture mountains when I think Alberta.
Funny, I always think of the badlands and dinosaurs when I think about Alberta 🙂
Neat! Thanks for the tip, my family and I are heading west in October
There is so much to see there! Writing on Stones Park is another cool place to visit if you are in the area!
Thanks!
Thanks for sharing. I have been in The Hat many times and did not know about this. Stay well. Allan
It’s worth a visit if you are in that area again. Keep safe and thanks for reading!
