A Window Well

We love it when we come up with a new way to repurpose a space in the van!  You may remember that we carry our fresh drinking water on board and save the water in the tanks for showering, flushing, dishwashing, etc.  This expands our water capacity significantly.

It’s all good except water take up a lot of space.  We usually take with us about 30 gallon of water in several reusable large containers that take up a lot of bulky space.  This uses up the entire compartment that we hoped will function as additional kitchen storage.

It seems like such a waste of good space.

The Solution

We finally figure out a way to bring water on board and use an area that otherwise would remain unused.

The windows in the van have small wells between the glass and the screens and we found water containers that fit in these spaces perfectly.

These containers fit in there nice and snug.  Make sure to close the screen about half way to prevent them from flying out if we take a wild turn.  Alternatively, you can store them horizontally, just make sure that they are closed properly and do not leak!

One concern was that the bottles will have too much sun exposure, but since the windows are tinted this is not an issue even during hot weather .

Still, we may insert an insulating liner behind the water containers just to be on the safe side.

How else can we use this space?

A narrow container similar to the one below can fit in the space and hold things such as kitchen gadgets.

You can decoupaged cereal and cracker boxes  to make them a bit sturdier and prettier.  They are great to put my book glasses and cell phone when I go to bed.  Here are a few that I made.

Make sure to measure the space in all of your window wells!  In our van each window well had a different width.

Even though these are tinted windows and you really can’t see inside, don’t tempt potential thieves.  Keep your valuables out of sight.

And that, my friends, is a window well used 🙂

it’s fun solving these type of real life puzzles. It brings back the memory of you sharing the inside of your van. Let’s see if the old memory can retrieve the name of your friend who filmed it—Mihaly? One of the things I still remember about that post was how you stored your inflatable craft and some of your other creative storage uses.

We would love to hear from you!
