Coronavirus Diaries – New and improved Plagues

We both got our second vaccine.  Lots of people are getting theirs and this post may very well be one of the last one of the Coronavirus Diaries series.

The world is opening up!

Alas, I had adverse reactions to the second dose which included high fever.  I slept a lot and had some interesting fever dreams. My feverish brain dreamt up the return of the plagues, only these were super plagues.

These plagues descended upon earth starting with a world-wide pandemic, global lockdown, masked people, deserted cities.

Then the fires started and millions of acres around the world went up in flames killing everything along the way.

Intense floods and flash floods, followed by hurricanes, typhoons, cyclones, and tornadoes. Earthquakes and tsunami came next, followed by volcano eruptions. If that wasn’t enough, we had mysterious monoliths appearing all over the world and in it’s heels a semi-confirmation from the US government that UFOs exist.

Besides natural disasters, the earth was cursed with several political figures that could fall into the Antichrist category causing civil unrest.  The stock markets crashed.  The real estate Market exploded.

And then there were murder hornets.  Ticks.  Locust.  Venom caterpillars.

To round this armagedon up nicely, my dream produced Gypsy Moth caterpillars.

Gypsy Moths Caterpillar

Millions of them spread over the land, one tree at the time, eating everything in their path.

There should have been leaves where there is light

If you sit silently, you can hear their poop dropping from the trees like gentle rain (thanks for this imagery, George).

This is caterpillar poop on our deck

As I sink back into sleep, I think that tomorrow I will wake up and laugh this bad dream away…

Oh, and if you were wondering, Tony had no side effects whatsoever.

We just got back from our 2nd post vaccination trip. It was night and day in terms of the airports. They are now crawling with people. Most were great about wearing their masks but there were three times as many people. It reminded me of pre-pandemic levels.

I haven’t know anyone personally who had died from Coronavirus, but that just changed. Our next door neighbor passed while we were gone. Such a sad situation as he was only 52 and leaves behind a wife and a twenty year old son. All three got the virus (antivax beliefs)—unnecessary and tragic.

That’s so sad and as you say, unnecessary. I really wish that there was something we could do to make these people process information in a different way, but I know it is only wishful thinking. And thanks for pointing out that although we seem to be going back to normal, there are still people dying and getting sick so we still need to be careful and think of others while we go about our regained normalcy!

That’s terrible. It would be interesting to know if they had the second shot. The data shows that more than 90% of people that are contracting the virus are unvaccinated, and that about 5% had only one shot. Still, a small number of fully vaccinated people did contract the virus as well.

It hurts my heart to hear about people who sicken and sometimes die because they aren’t willing to listen to the science. I hope you’ve completely recovered.

Every body is different – I had vertigo if I turned my head too quickly, and an almost headache if I was standing – but no fever, and I’d already given myself permission to do nothing, so I was fine.

Glad you are now fully vaccinated, though sorry to hear it’s been a rough ride. We had our second jabs last week and suffered just a few days of tiredness. Onwards and upwards!

Wow! That was a nightmare… or a movie script. Makes you wonder how our brains dig up this stuff. As far as side effects go. They are actually good. I nurse who was part of a vaccine study told me that they mean that you have a healthy immune system and the side effects are proof that it is working hard to build up antibodies. So cheers, you are healthier than you may think. I get my second shot on Sunday. After my last one, which provided quite a range of side effects, I am interested to see what this one brings on.

I had bad side effects from my first shot – chills so rediculous that I thought my bones would break. 🙄. It was gone in a couple of days. I missed out on the nightmares. 🤗 Maybe when I get my second shot.

Congratulations on being fully vaxxed! Sorry to hear about your side effects. I’m currently recovering from my second dose too. It’s not too bad, but it’s still uncomfortable

those are some vivid dreams, some of which, unfortunately, seem to have been sparked by reality…

I’m glad you are fully vaccinated and hopefully feel better soon…

My beloved had a strong reaction to her 2nd dose of Pfizer. On the 2nd night, fever, chills and aches and then a swollen lymph node in her armpit. Apparently, this is a thing. I just had a low grade headache and a tiny bit of nausea. Good to see the vaccine promotes a strong immune response. Now as to the gentle rain of gypsy moth caterpillar poop. Yech. Stay well. Allan

This would have been so much easier to tolerate if we didn’t have this crazy gypsy moth caterpillars invasion! They are everywhere and on everything. I can add to the imagery dead caterpillar’s dried carcasses floating in the air all around us. It just gets weirder and weirder….oh, well. Sorry your beloved had such a reaction as well, but sounds like she is good now. I’m on my 6th day and going through each and every symptom in the book. Sure hope it does mean that my immune system has super powers!

Horrible dreams. Speaking of plagues parts of rural Victoria and NSW are enduring a massive invasion of mice which is causing havoc and most unpleasant. My husband and I are due to get our first COVID shots early next month. I’m a bit anxious about it. We have no cases where we live but our state goes into lockdown and then introduces restrictions all the time! Take care and hopefully we will find those back roads that are less travelled!

Welcome to the fully-vaxxed club! The second dose can be a doozy (I had an annoying headache for about four days, but that was it), but you survived and are more-protected against COVID-19 than before. The world still has a long way to recovery, but day-by-day, it gets better. Take care, and stay safe!

It sounds a lot less than a dream and more like reality. We had a huge windstorm last Wednesday in Melbourne and there are still thousands of people without electricity because of huge mountain ash trees falling over and taking out the powerlines.
PS which vaccine did you have?

  12. backroadsandotherstories says:

Yeah, there was no dream, this is all reality…sorry to hear about your storm and power outage and hope it is mostly restored now! I had the Moderna and Tony had the Pfizer, but my daughter had the Pfizer with similar reaction as me. It may have to do more with genetics than the type of vaccine, but I am not sure.

  13. WanderingCanadians says:

Congrats on getting your second jab. Hopefully you’ll recover soon from the side effects. Those gypsy moth caterpillars are no joke. They are terrible in Halton and our trees are just covered with them. I am trying to convince my nieces and nephews to come over and see who can kill the most caterpillars. The winner will even get a prize!

    • backroadsandotherstories says:

Thanks! These caterpillars are horrifying. They are EVERYWHERE. The oak trees have no leaves on them and since we have so many trees, there is very little we can do but watch in horror. We have a little genocide bucket with soap and water and we go around flicking the little horrors into it, but it’s just for cosmetics around the house. Once the moths lay eggs, we’ll go around and scrape as much of the egg nests as we can into the soapy water in the hope that it will control next year’s population.

Hi Tony and Margie, I am happy to hear you both have your second vaccine now. I appreciate the information you share about your reactions on the second dose. Mine is coming up next week and I should not plan much for afterwards. Your description of the Armageddon made me smile in a sad, ironic way. You brought back memories of living with millions of caterpillars many years ago in Prince George. I distinctly recall the smell and our car sliding all over the street due to the numbers. Glad to hear Tony had no side effects.

Waking up after that nightmare makes this pandemic not seem so bad! Glad you’ve gotten your second shot. I feel better knowing I have some protection.

We would love to hear from you!
