Prince Edward County – Long Point

Our moving day is fast approaching.  We decided to take a break from packing and go on a short trip to Prince Edward County Long Point Road Beach.  What we really needed was a distraction since we can’t wait for to move to our new house, new town, and new life!

Little did we know that about an hour in, a nice distraction was coming our way in the form of a rock that dislodged from a truck.  Damn.  Not only do we have to replace the windshield, we will also need to reseal the entire area that is prone to leaks.

Windshield crack

But we soldiered on.  We needed a beach, some sunshine, and water; nothing was going to stop us.   We did have to cut our trip short though, since we found a company that will replace the windshield in our driveway in a couple of days.

We crested the bridge that leads to Prince Edward County and immediately were transformed into a different world.  You know that island feel?  The different pace, the smell of water and frying fish?

our first stop was to check in at our Harvest Host location for the night, a small organic farm tucked away on a side road.  Ben’s Blooms in a delightful and welcoming place, and we’ll write about it more on our next post.

But first the beach.  On our first van trip three years ago, we discovered a wonderful beach on Long Point Road.  Now that we’ll be moving three hours farther away, we thought it will be nice to visit it again before it becomes a far destination.

This beautiful and unusual beach consists of flat large pebbles, and unlike other rocky beaches it is quite comfortable to walk on.

It’s also comfortable for sunbathing, which we did.

The north end of the beach consists of large flat rocks.

The beach is nestled by the Bird Observatory (currently closed) and within the boundaries of a national wildlife area. There is free parking along the side of the road, but there weren’t many people, which is so surprising.  Maybe because it’s a bit out of the way?

We made lunch and brought is to the beach.

Went for a swim in the cold but still inviting and deliciously refreshing water.

and back to lying on the beach.

Later, we explored the rocky parts of the beach.

admired the geometric shapes of these giant submerged slabs.

The water swirls in the crevices and under the rocks

and you can hear the water lapping in the crevices.

We spent a couple of hours on the beach and then continued to Point Petre Wildlife Conservation Area for a short hike before returning to Ben’s Blooms Harvest Host farm.

But more about that next time.

Glad to hear that you were able to take a break from packing and visit Prince Edward County. That’s such a beautiful area. That sucks about your cracked windshield though but at least it didn’t prevent you from going on your adventures. That beach looks gorgeous. We’ll have to check this out next time we’re in the area. Have a great weekend. Linda

It is a lovely area. Being there practically all by yourself was a huge bonus. I’m sure it helped bring calm to your life. It helps balance out the rest.

Looks like a great place to visit. Those giant rock slabs are really something. Were they at all slippery? The rocks in Lake Ontario out here often get slippery in the summer with the growth of algae. Sorry to hear about your windshield, however you both have a great way of making the most of it. Happy moving!

Beautiful area! How far are you moving? Was this part of your retirement plan, or did it just kind of happen?

It is beautiful! We are moving 3 hours west of us, so the opposite direction from Prince Edward County. The area we are moving to is right on the border with Michigan on the shores of Lake Huron. Part of our retirement plan was to move, but didn’t know where we will move to. We considered a few options, but at the end we decided to stay in Ontario and find a house that is more in town and close to a lake and to parks. Although we had a bit of a hiccup with Covid and prices going up in all the areas that we looked, we did end up finding something that didn’t require too many compromises 🙂

Great! Well, don’t judge too much of your retirement on this year as it is all wonky. Everything has been smooth sailing for us. Covid has gotten in the way a bit, but we’re healthy and that’s got to be the #1 priority right now.

That’s certainly a lot of flat rocks! I don’t think I’ve come across a shoreline with such unique stones, but they certainly make for a distinctive and memorable time by the water. I’m glad you got to make a getaway to Prince Edward to enjoy the natural beauty of it all!

thanks for that peaceful video; the rock in the water at the end looks like a turtle.

You two are tough – that water must have been quite cold, and then laying on those rocks!

Glad you were able to take a break from your packing – I am sure you are quite excited about the move!

You two find the greatest spots! Is this beach on PEI? I wasn’t sure if the county and the island are the same? And, I am very aware of the expensive toll to/from Prince Edward Island, so didn’t think it would be worth that for one day, but maybe I’m wrong?

Prince Edward County is a very relaxing place within easy reach of Toronto, perfect for a weekend away. There are enough nooks and crannies to explore to keep you busy for a while. I remember this field full of birdhouses of all shapes and sizes.

Grrr… sorry about that windshield. Our windshield is pitted with several rock chips. We’re holding out until we get back to AZ to replace it. Looks like a fun getaway before the moving starts.

I loved your description of getting to that island feel… and the opening image made me jealous. The geometric shapes under the water, in the video, are quite interesting.

We would love to hear from you!
