The Chronicles of Sarnia: an Epic Storm

The weather in Sarnia is consistently stable with most weather systems bypassing it to the north or to the south.  Most, but not all.  According to locals, this was a big one.

Trees and branches were down, the power was out for several hours, and the beach changed acquiring debris, rocks, and seaweed.

We drove to the beach during the storm and watched.

We watched in greater awe this guy who jumped into the water fully clothed and lay there for a very long time.  The power of nature versus the curious behaviour of man.

We then drove further down the beach and watched the lake take over the land.

The river was also stormy.  Take a look at the seagulls hovering over the water.  Apparently seagulls behave in a very telling way before and during storms.  We’ll keep an eye on them!

Perhaps the guy in the previous photo had some seagull DNA.

When we got back home the power was still out.  We found candles and spent a quiet evening listening to the wind.

The next morning our backyard was a mess and piece of the fence broke,

but there was no time to clean since we had to go back for another load of unnecessary belongings accumulated over the years.

When we got back, we headed straight to the beach and couldn’t believe how the storm impacted the landscape!  Remember previous photos of the beautiful sandy beach?  Well, it didn’t look like that any more.

Debris was strewn all over the beach,  and some hidden features exposed;

some more random than others.

Was this big trunk carried by the storm or exposed by it?

We did find some treasures amongst the trash.

The next day everything was calm again.  Paddlers were back on the water,

and children’s beach toys were left on the beach again.

We watched another sunset and went home to clean up our yard.

Next, we will tell you about the evolution of a pop can.

What a curious sight that man must have been! It would have certainly crossed my mind if he was trying to end his life?

The thought crossed my mind and I was watching him very closely. He was actually enjoying himself immensely and I suspect that he was a bit high. He had a friend waiting in the car who didn’t seem concerned at all and all I could think about is: is he going to get back into his car soaked?

I love how your initial instinct was to hit the beach during the storm. I’m sure watching those waves was mesmerizing … as was watching that random dude lay in the shallows during the storm. Sorry to hear that your backyard sustained some damage.

thanks for those videos; those were some big waves. that guy seems a bit crazy to be laying there. It’s nice to see that the weater calmed down the next, but unfortunately it left that mess behind. a nice welcome to your new neighborhood…

Fellow Sarnian here. I love the videos of our awesome storm. We get about one of those a year. The lake can get pretty angry and it’s definitely a site to see!

We would love to hear from you!
