Pukaskwa Camp Hosting: September 16

We drove to Marathon for groceries and spotted a Hymer Aktiv van in one of the parking lots.  Hymer Aktiv is the Carado Banff’s cousin, both orphaned when Roadtrek went out of business.  I wanted to stop and chat, but Tony insisted to press on.  Oh well.

We drove about 80 km west to Terrace Bay.

Aguasabon Falls and Gorge

Our first stop was Aguasabon Falls and gorge.  A series of beautiful and accessible boardwalks, ramps, and stairs led to the waterfall lookout.

An impressive drop although not a lot of water today.

Still beautiful

Terrace Bay

We continued to Terrace Bay Beach, and here we are cresting over the first terrace.  The first in a series of ancient beaches.

a long sandy beach

with a nice boardwalk and lots of beach glass

and of cours, more interesting rocks.

The lighthouse Carswells

We then drove to the restored lighthouse that is situated in a parking lot in the middle of town.  Lo and behold, that same Aktiv was parked there.

We pulled next to it.  It had New Mexico licence plate and a large sticker “Carswell” on the side.  Are these Sam and Kathy Carswell by any chance?  Yes, it was them (the two on the right, not the other clowns).

Those of you who campervan may know Sam Carswell from SUIET Hacks, a great site for problem-solving our van’s electrical systems issues.  Kathy and Sam invited us over and we spent a couple of hours chatting and sharing snacks.  We had to leave to get back to our post and half way back we realized that we forgot to look at the lighthouse.

We stopped on our way back at a lookout

and watched a long train meander through the hills.  We need to come back and catch it as it approaches the bridge.

Another rainy, quiet night at the campsite.

What a lovely outing despite the gray day! Aguasabon Falls and Terrace Bay are on the to do list next time we head up North. The meandering train was so colourful and nicely contrasted the tree line!

I have to say the idea of retirement and being able to set up camp in the outdoors and explore the local area is so appealing. Only a few more (we’ll more than a few) years to go! 😆 Enjoy the rest of your time.

The view from above the falls and in to the deep gorge is stunning! And imagine running in to the Carswell’s! It just goes to show that you never know who you’ll find on the back roads!

Aguasabon Falls and gorge is another spot we seemed to have missed on our road trips across Northern Ontario. I’ll have to add it to the list for next time. And how fun to make some new friends while on the road.

One of the reasons that I wanted to do camp hosting is that it forced us to stay in one place and explore the area. We usually move on every day or two, and of course, we pick and choose what to see, and we usually look back and see that we missed something that we would have liked to see. That being said, I still like road trips a lot!

I’ve been to Banff but I’ve never been to where you are. The cover photo looks amazing!! I love the mood and the vibe, I’m also super jealous 🤪 I hope you guys enjoy every second of it! Meanwhile I’ll live vicariously through you

We would love to hear from you!
