It was rainy and foggy, and we decided to drive to Marathon, mostly to do some housekeeping stuff that required stable internet and good cell reception. We drove to Carden Cove and took advantage of a break in the rain to go for a long walk on the beach.
There were lots of little brooks flowing into the cove
Fog and mystery hung in the air
but all we found was many interesting rocks,
The driftwood was interesting too and we found some that showed termite(?) activity
The next piece of driftwood was waterlogged wood that separated along the growth rings of the tree, which was very interesting to see.
Looks like there are quite a few bonfires going on this beach.
They were all over the place. Tony does the fire in a similar way by the way, just much smaller.
We spent a couple of hours doing the aforementioned internet stuff and Tony tried to resolve our Garmin issue. The GPS had a software update just before we left for this trip and hasn’t really worked properly ever since. It calculates a route up to 80% and stops, and our van seems to be travelling in random fields along the route. So far no luck solving the issue and Garmin’s customer service do not work on the weekends. To be continued.
It was time to get back to the campground and we drove through the thick fog. Usually there is a river where you see fog in the photo below.
This is the usual view from the bridge.
Hoping for moose or bear, we only had some grouse sightings along the way.
Back at the campsite we decided to start a fire after dinner despite the rain in the forecast. We spent a few hours sitting by the fire sipping wine, and the first drops of rain started coming down just as our last log was burning up. We even managed to roast some potatoes in the ambers.
So there you have it, another uneventful day of camp hosting. Stay tuned for tomorrow’s adventures.
Those are some massive bonfires! 😄 Despite the gray foggy soggy days, you two had an awesome day out in nature. Very creepy to see what termites do but it’s all part of nature I guess!
I kind of like foggy gloomy days, but not all the time 🙂
I love the foggy pictures of the lake. I’m sure it felt really nice to sit by a toasty warm campfire afterwards to get rid of some of the dampness. And potatoes just taste so much better cooked over a campfire. Mmm.
For some reason camp food always tastes good to me. Even canned beans have an extra flavour to them when camping.
I think uneventful days (at least in the camp) is probably the goal of camp hosting. It’s been fun to read about your experiences. I could be wrong, but I suspect this is going to be a short-time gig for you as I wonder if hosting gets in the way of your traveling adventures.
You may be right, but read on the next posts to find out about our misadventure after camp hosting (we are a few days ahead as you probably figured). Sometimes the safety of uneventful days can be appealing!
Looking forward to it, even though it sounds ominous.
Now that there’s fog, the area looks even more like Nova Scotia. I am enjoying your camp- hosting adventure.
There is a Maritime-esque feel to the area!
I agree the fog literally adds another layer to the exploring and camping experience – I wouldn’t mind roaming about in that weather myself. Those roasted fire potatoes at evening’s end sound like a great way to finish off a fun day.
There’s nothing like a roaring fire to end up the day. The potatoes are a bonus!
Absolutely!
i love foggy, gloomy days, just not every day 🙂
Looks like your “uneventful day” was actually quite lovely. And hopefully your gps issues resolve quickly.
It did turn out very nice after all. The GPS will have to wait until we get home 😥

Beautiful location and pictures.
Thank you!
You have found a beautiful location, in any type of weather. I love the photos of the rocks and wood; very creative.
Thank you, and yes, it is a wonderful park!
Wow, sounds like a great gig – this camp hosting. You have all day to do whatever you want – and no cleaning bathrooms?
And what a beautiful park!
It’s a pretty sweet deal! All you have to do is socialize in the evening and sell some wood. Definitely no toilet cleaning only nights by the fire 🔥
