Pukaskwa Camp Hosting: September 17

It was rainy and foggy, and we decided to drive to Marathon, mostly to do some housekeeping stuff that required stable internet and good cell reception.  We drove to Carden Cove and took advantage of a break in the rain to go for a long walk on the beach.

There were lots of little brooks flowing into the cove

Fog and mystery hung in the air

but all we found was many interesting rocks,

Golden Rock

Abstract Canvas Rock

Rocks Arranged By Nature

Mossy Sheet Rock

Rocks Flowing into the Lake

The driftwood was interesting too and we found some that showed termite(?) activity

The next piece of driftwood was waterlogged wood that separated along the growth rings of the tree, which was very interesting to see.

Looks like there are quite a few bonfires going on this beach.

They were all over the place.  Tony does the fire in a similar way by the way, just much smaller.

We spent a couple of hours doing the aforementioned internet stuff and Tony tried to resolve our Garmin issue.  The GPS had a software update just before we left for this trip and hasn’t really worked properly ever since.  It calculates a route up to 80% and stops, and our van seems to be travelling in random fields along the route.  So far no luck solving the issue and Garmin’s customer service do not work on the weekends.  To be continued.

It was time to get back to the campground and we drove through the thick fog.  Usually there is a river where you see fog in the photo below.

This is the usual view from the bridge.

Hoping for moose or bear, we only had some grouse sightings along the way.

Back at the campsite we decided to start a fire after dinner despite the rain in the forecast.  We spent a few hours sitting by the fire sipping wine, and the first drops of rain started coming down just as our last log was burning up.  We even managed to roast some potatoes in the ambers.

So there you have it, another uneventful day of camp hosting.  Stay tuned for tomorrow’s adventures.

Those are some massive bonfires! 😄 Despite the gray foggy soggy days, you two had an awesome day out in nature. Very creepy to see what termites do but it’s all part of nature I guess!

I love the foggy pictures of the lake. I’m sure it felt really nice to sit by a toasty warm campfire afterwards to get rid of some of the dampness. And potatoes just taste so much better cooked over a campfire. Mmm.

I think uneventful days (at least in the camp) is probably the goal of camp hosting. It’s been fun to read about your experiences. I could be wrong, but I suspect this is going to be a short-time gig for you as I wonder if hosting gets in the way of your traveling adventures.

I agree the fog literally adds another layer to the exploring and camping experience – I wouldn’t mind roaming about in that weather myself. Those roasted fire potatoes at evening’s end sound like a great way to finish off a fun day.

Wow, sounds like a great gig – this camp hosting. You have all day to do whatever you want – and no cleaning bathrooms?

    And what a beautiful park!

We would love to hear from you!
